Venture-Backed Deal Doldrums

One thing that can be said of last year for venture backed deals: not only was it no 2000, but it wasn't even 2004. Absent the headline-grabbing Google-type transactions of the previous year, the number of IPOs was down 40% to 56 from 2004, and the number of acquisitions slipped to 330 from 339. One of the few bright spots: the average dollar value of M&A deals was bigger, if only a little.
