Symantec, Still Tops in Antivirus Share, Loses Ground


With at least 80% share, Symantec's dominance of the antivirus market remains intact -- for now. It's lost 5 percentage points since March, according to NPD Group. Trend Micro is advancing quickly, while McAfee continues a slow, steady march. Trend Micro boasted 5% share of the market, measured by units sold in August. That's up from 1.7% in December. McAfee accounted for 11% of units sold in August, compared with 10% at the end of last year. Computer Associates and Intego rounded out the top five, with less than 2% of the market combined.
