EFJ (EFJI)

When it comes to wireless communications, EFJ is serious about security. The Irving, Texas-based developer of secure radio and wireless systems reported huge gains last year in its voice encryption services used by U.S. soldiers in Iraq. Through Voice-over-Internet-Protocol, or VoIP, technology, the company is bridging the gap between analog and digital systems, making it easier for federal and local emergency response teams to work together. And with the likelihood of more natural disasters ahead, demand for EFJ's technology is way up. Sales reached $95 million in 2005, and over the past three years, average annual profits rose 151%. Beyond those in the private sector, key customers include the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense (which has accounted for about a third of revenues since 2004), and the New York Police Department.

Executive Bio

Michael Jalbert has been president and chief executive of EFJ, since March, 1999, and chairman since March, 1999. Jalbert serves as chairman and CEO of EFJohnson, a subsidiary of EFJ. Prior to joining EFJ, Jalbert served as president and CEO of Microdyne, a NASDAQ company from March, 1997, to February, 1999. Prior to joining Microdyne, Jalbert was president and CEO of IDB Communications, a Bethesda (Md.) satellite service communications provider, from 1995 to 1997. From 1992 to 1995, Jalbert served as president of the CSD Div. of Diversey, a chemical manufacturer based in Livonia, Mich. Jalbert joined Diversey from West Chemical, a specialty chemical manufacturing company in Princeton, N.J., where he was president and chief operating officer from 1987 to 1992. Jalbert has been a director of EFJ since March, 1999, and serves on the executive committee. He serves as a director of Microdyne. Jalbert is on the board of directors of AEA, a technology trade association based in Washington, D.C. Jalbert attended the Executive Program at the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business in 1976 and holds a BS from the Loyola-Concordia University.
