| INTERNATIONAL -- ASIAN COVER STORY
N.R. Narayana Murthy, Founder, Infosys Technologies, India (int'l edition) THE U.S. HAS DISCOVERED INDIA'S HIGH-TECH INDUSTRY, and the credit is largely due to shy, unflappable engineer N.R. Narayana Murthy. His Infosys Technologies Ltd. made history on Mar. 11, as the first Indian company to list on a U.S. exchange. The NASDAQ offering raised $70 million; U.S. shares have since advanced 20%. Murthy, 53, tops business surveys as the most highly esteemed manager in India, thanks to his mathematical prowess and Western-style management skills. And his profits are rising 70% annually. Murthy started the company with eight other software engineers in 1981 in a Bombay apartment. For him, listing is a dream come true: ''It's a giant step for Infosys and the Indian software industry. It will help us to globalize further.'' Infosys, which provides customized software to companies such as Northern Telecom and Reebok International, has long adhered to U.S. accounting standards and provided shareholders with quarterly performance data. It is the first Indian company to offer employee stock options. Founding a company and listing it on NASDAQ is now the goal of programmers all over India. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ BACK TO TOP |
